Erik ten Hag names Manchester United star that could replace Christian Eriksen

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag admits Lisandro Martinez could be a surprise choice to fill the void left by Christian Eriksen in the side’s midfield.

The Denmark international was ruled out for at least 12 weeks on Tuesday when United confirmed he had sustained a significant ankle injury in Saturday’s win against Reading.

United swooped late to sign Bayern Munich star Marcel Sabitzer on loan for the remainder of the season but the Austrian will be given time to settle in at Old Trafford.

But the Red Devils can ill-afford to wait, with games coming thick and fast for Ten Hag’s side.

With Scott McTominay out for the next two matches, Fred and Casemiro are the only recognised central midfielders available to the Dutchman.

Ten Hag has played the likes of Luke Shaw, Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes in new positions this season.

And the Dutchman says Martinez, who initially played in midfield for Ten Hag when he joined Ajax, could be an option to replace Eriksen. He did it before [for Ajax],’ said Ten Hag

‘This is also one thing that me as a manager, you have to be creative in certain situations when in other departments you have players who can’t be starting XI players.

‘I can only play one player in that position, maybe we can move the departments and be creative to form the team.’
