Arsenal set to lose out on £30m transfer target as RB Leipzig line up move

Arsenal are set to lose out on Bundesliga target Jesper Lindstrom after RB Leipzig earmarked the Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder as their replacement for Christopher Nkunku this summer.

The Gunners were thought to be interested in the versatile midfielder, having been linked with a move for the Dane in each of the last three transfer windows.

Able to play either in midfield or the forward line, the 23-year-old has appeared 26 times in the Bundesliga this season, grabbing 7 goals and 4 assists in the process, though his efforts don’t look to have been enough to secure European football heading into next season unless they beat RB Leipzig in the German cup.

Mikel Arteta and Liverpool were both thought to be keen on recruiting the Dane in a deal that could have set them back around 40m euros, with the Gunners slightly ahead in the race but Lindstrom a self-confessed Liverpool fan from his childhood.

However, both now seem unlikely to happen.

According to German outlet Sports Bild, it is German outfit RB Leipzig that have taken the lead for the youngster’s signature.

Leipzig have already agreed to sell Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea this summer for a figure in excess of £60m, and having confirmed their qualification for next season’s Champions League, they are looking to replace the Frenchman, who has found the net 14 times in 24 Bundesliga outings this campaign despite a three-month layoff in the middle of the season.

And they believe that Lindstrom is the right man to do just that, and are ready to offer 30m to secure his services for next season, where he could form a new look attack with fellow new boy Benjamin Sesko, a striker arriving from RB Salzburg.
